How to Replace Brother Toner Cartridges in Your Printer

Replacing toner cartridges can seem a bit intimidating if you’ve never done it before, but it is generally an easy process.

When your machine alerts you that it’s time to replace the toner cartridge, follow these steps for the best results:

1. Turn off the machine.
2. Open the front cover of the machine.
3. Remove the empty toner cartridge and drum unit.
4. Push the green lock lever to release the cartridge from the drum unit. Remove the empty toner cartridge.
5. Unpack the new toner cartridge.
6. Remove the protective cover from the new toner cartridge.
7. Firmly insert the new toner cartridge into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.
8. Slide the green tab from side to side several times to clean the corona wire inside the drum unit.
9. Insert the cartridge and drum unit back into the machine.
10. Close the front cover of the machine.

Why does my Brother printer keep saying replace toner?
When it is almost time to replace your toner cartridge, you will receive alerts from your printer – first that the toner is running low, and then again when it runs out. Running your printer with an empty toner cartridge can cause damage to your machine, so remember to replace the cartridge promptly.

When do I replace a toner cartridge?
There are two ways you can keep track of your toner’s remaining lifespan.

The first way is to check the packaging of your toner cartridge to find how many pages (on average) the cartridge can print before running empty. You can use this to estimate approximately when the cartridge will need to be replaced. This is great if you want to set up automatic orders for refills.

The other way is to simply wait for your machine to notify you. The prompts will say “toner low” or “replace toner” as the cartridge is close to running out.

Before installation, you’ll need to prep your new cartridge for the printer. How do you prep your toner cartridge?
Preparing a new toner cartridge can be a bit messy. Be sure to have a trash can close by that you can work over to prevent stains on the carpet or other surfaces. DO NOT prep the cartridge before it is needed. Opening or prepping a cartridge before it needs to go into the machine can result in a shortened lifespan.

• When the printer has shown the alert “toner low” or “replace toner,” unbox your replacement cartridge and remove it from its packaging.
• Turn off the printer, then open the front of the printer.
• Remove the old toner cartridge.
• Remove the orange protective clip from the bottom of the new cartridge (try to do this over a trash can). The clip protects the cartridge during shipping, and the cartridge will not go into the machine with it attached.
• Tip the cartridge from side to side a few times to evenly distribute the toner powder.
• Pull the seal tape out from the side of the cartridge. The tape should come out in one long strip. Discard after removal.
• The cartridge is now ready for installation.

Are compatible toner cartridges any good?
There are advantages and disadvantages to using compatible toner cartridges. Brother recommends that you use only original cartridges for the benefit of your printer and the quality of printouts. If you want to use compatible cartridges, be sure to do your research to find the best alternatives that suit your printer model.

How do I know if I need a new toner cartridge?
